Simply put whats your favorite setting? I love Ravenloft (A gothic horror setting) but it tends to be restrictive due to its size. Other than that I'd have to say I prefer to play in either self made settings or the Outer Planes.

RavenLoft is all I ever experienced so Its my favorite by default. It has gothic horror style but it doesn't lack in traditional fantasy either. The others like greyhawk seems to just be common fantasy or like Forgotten Realms which seem to be more like super duper fantasy. I would of liked an Outerspace D&D setting, but Spelljammers is all there is and its too out there to take seriously. Luckily there exists the StarWars rpg for that where the force sort of mantains the mystical elements. though I could do with a little more fantasy. I would like to see a new Outerspace D&D project with more magic then starwars but more realistic then SpellJammers.

My favorite to read about is Ravenloft. It has the most interesting NPCs and very flavorful setting, but it's hard work to DM properly there. Running a more roleplaying-intensive horror story is much harder than a normal D&D game, and when I ran a Ravenloft campaign I didn't feel like I captured the proper mood of the setting.
My favorite to play in is the Forgotten Realms. It's set up very well for traditional fantasy, and you can easily tweak it to be lower-magic or higher-magic as you choose. Plus I've had a very good DM for the two Realms games I've played in the most, so of course that helps.

I have to say my favorite to run is LOTR. But maybe there's a certain amount of pre-requisite knowledge to really effectively run it outside the most talked about timeline...
I have most enjoyed playing in the Ebberon campaign setting. The idea of something incredibly mysterious happening only a few years before the campaign adds a whole lot of mystery. Using magic like technology: now that's how I always envisioned it

Ravenloft is great since I like gothic horror and this is the true meaning of gothic. It's not a bunch of nuts in black droning on about how life sucks. Arabian Adventures intereats me a lot because there's the fun magic. I don't care much for wizards and thier schools. Arabian Adventures offers the whole Aladdin feel with flying carpets and whatnot.

I'm an old school AD&D player, havent had the chance to play for X many years now...Greyhawk was alright...I really enjoyed the Mystara campaign, lots of fun there...Hollow World was kinda interesting...I also got into Dark Sun...Ravenloft was okay, I'm not really into vampires all that much...I know its not related, but masquerade made me fall asleep from boredom even if I had a rockstar Nosferatu...Forgotten Realms had too much magic going on everywhere for me to like it...felt like an improper balance....out of everything I listed, Mystara and Dark Sun were by far the best ones to play in...frequently I would just transfer over my existing usual character as if he was on one long voyage...my multiclass minotaur had a lot of adventure, for sure...conquering and reuniting the Broken Lands was a blast..

I can't get into Dark Sun. As a card-carrying psionic hater, Dark Sun turns me off right away.
I'd sure love to have a go at Planescape someday, though.

Dark Sun is pretty fun tho...metal weapons make you both wealthy and a target...magic is kinda looked down on enough to get a price put on your head...almost everything is desert...my minotaur had to keep shaving so he didnt die of heat exhaustion

I'll stick with Ravenloft since all I own are books for it plus I love the fact that the dark powers will punish evil for me.
