Well we had the first game yesterday which got off to a rocky start but hopefully wasn't too bad and was enjoyable. I think I'm going to go ahead and use the campaign book for ideas and keep the base story pretty much the same and what not, but I'm going to make up my own story and planning inbetween. The reason is that I just don't like following a pre-made campaign at all. But let me try to give a description of what happened the first session since only two out of five could make it.
The group, at this point consisting of Alex, Andy, and Tony accept a mission to go find a nobleman that ventured into Barovia three months ago and never returned. They are to bring him back to his wife, and if he is found dead, bring back his wedding ring.
About a days walk from Barovia the group runs into a man, who happened to be Vistani, who gives the memebers of the group a letter from the Burgomaster of the Village of Barovia. He claims that recent attacks from enormous wolves has caused much pain and problems for his people and the group is asked to deal with it. The burgomasters daughter, Ireena has also been bitten by the wolves, and no remedy can be found.
Upon getting into Barovia the group notices a fog slowly appear from what seems nowhere. The group eventually makes there way into the Village of Barovia that is deathly quiet. The group quickly discovers that an incursion of zombies has accured.
The group manages to save a family of two parents and three kids from certain death by bringing them to the towns last stand. In the town square barricades have been setup and any survivors are being sent to the Tavern until the invasion is dealt with.
The only other safe building besides the tavern in town is the village mercantile ran by a man who cares only for his own survival and money. Andy manages to give him enough money to allow his building to be used as a second place of rest for the remaining survivors; the tavern was getting very cramped.
The group comes across a female human Paladin by the name of Ashlyn. She was in the middle of fighting several undead who broke through the barrier and was easily outnumbered when the group came to help her out.
She explained she was looking for her partners that ran off to the church against her advice. She is eager to find them as well as investigate the church. It is believed the start of the zombie incursion came from there.
The group talks to a man named Ismark who is the burgomaster's son. Ismark tells the group that his father has been dead for some time and that his dad did not write the letters they received. He advises them to see Madame Eva for further advice.
After several days of rest the group heads out to the church with Ashlyn and ends up fighting an abomination known as Doru, the son of the village priest who died in battle. His father tried to bring him back to life, but only brought him back as a mindless zombie that infected the entire town with a horrible disease. The group also finds Ashlyn's parteners with Doru as a part of the zombie incursion.
After killing Doru, the priest escapes town, but the zombie incursion immedietely stops. The party is greeted with a great welcome and thanks for stopping the plague and saving the town.
After a week or so of helping rebuild the town, and help people get back to normal, the party heads to the burgomasters daughters house, Ireena to talk with her.
The group quickly discovers that Ireena was not bitten by a wolf, but by a vampire. Ireena tells the group she has been having horrible nightmares of Count Strahd, the ruler in the castle of Barovia, kissing her and waking up with the marks on her neck. She asks the group to go see Madame Eva for advice and asks that she come with. She assures the group that she is an accomplished fighter and can stand on her own; the group accepts.
The group agrees to wait for the full moon to pass before heading to see Eva. One night while sleeping, Ireena is attacked by a very large wolf in her own home. Andy goes to her aid, but the wolf jumps out the window and out of town. Ireena was able to be brought back to health with more bite marks; however.
The group finally decides to move out to see Eva. They are taken there by a Vistani who sells them each a potion that allows them to cross a dense fog surrounding the village of Barovia; without it you would surely choke to death from the fog.
Once the group gets to Eva she reads their future using Tarot-like cards. She claims that a powerful sword agaisnt undead is found in a cemetary. As well as the holy symbol Ireena once had, also useful agaisnt undead and vampires is located somewhere in/by a waterfall. Finally she says that the wolf that attacked Ireena can be found in a library assumed to be in the castle; aslo that this wolf is more than just a lone wolf. The group figures out here that it is likely that Count Strahd wrote them the letters they have, and that he has more to do with things happeneing than they origianlly thought.
Eva tells the group to head back to the crossroads they passed coming to meet her; there they will meet up with someone who can tell them their next move be it dealing with the wolves, Strahd, or other.
Ashlyn decides that she wants to return to the village of Barovia and investigate a cemetary behind the church and look for the sword Eva mentioned; it is afterall one of the reasons she came to Barovia in the first place.
