Lot to ask, lets see...
I love Big O alot. The easiest comparisson for people who haven't seen it is to say that it's like a japanese batman except his rubber suit is a giant robot. It's kinda film noir-ish in general and I enjoy that alot. Kind of takes place in an old new york where there is a dash of high technology. The kicker is that everyone in the city lost their memory 40 years prior to the start of the series.
People should watch if they want a little mystery and a little action together

Trigun is another great anime.
Saying the whole plot and reason for the characters to be doing what they're doing seems like too much a spoiler to me. However it's on a planet that's seems to be all desert. Guns are on most people and a whole lot of them are looking for Vash the Stampede. He's also known as the 60 billion double dollar(currency) man. Trouble follows the guy and he's absolutely amazing with a gun though tries his very best not to kill. So two insurance assesors come to find vash and it picks up from there.
I will say this the best guy in that show is the priest with a gynormous cross gun: Wolfwood.
Watch Trigun if you like some morals to your story and emotion in your show. But also watch it if you like action and guns. You have to like guns if you watch this or you'll explode. Also there's a little comedy with the insurance girls, but it works as far as I see it.

Another awesome anime is Fooley Cooley. FLCL for short.
Though it's probably not a begginers anime unless you're sort of messed up in the head. Ironically the show has alot to do with what comes out of peoples heads... literally. In this far too short show the main character of middle school age is harassed by a mysterious older girl. Insanity ensues. Robots, guitars, and LOTS of sexual inuendos are just a bit of what you'll see in this one. It's bizzare enough to keep your attention.
Don't panic! There is a loose plot to the whole thing. Watch this anime if you have an open mind and good taste to get some of the jokes,(inside though some are).

back in a time DBZ and other assorted violant animes where my world, a new show came....a show called .hack//sign...
its an anime like no other, where in most animes, action is the plot, .hack//sign was all about plot, quite litterally 2 episodes had any fighting in it at all, the rest were story story story, the whole plot is actually devided up between a manga (japanesse comic) two differant anime series, and 4 vidio games, and a DVD came with each game, so you can say theres a mini series in there too.
the original show took place in "the world" which is the name of the worlds biggest MMORPG (massive multi-player online role playing game) it fallowed a character named tsukasa who was a player who's traped in the game
the games also took place in the world several years after the original anime, but they fallowed a new player by the name of kite and his adventures through "the world" the first day he logged in his best friend in the real world was attacked my a strange monster and went into a coma, through out all the games you slowly unravle the mystery surrounding the coma victims
in the OAVs the story centers around people who play the game (but they never say who they are in the game, but with some people its implyed who they are) and the way the problims in "the world" are affecting the real world which is now almost completly run by computers.
the next anime take place a year after the games, they follow two characters, a brother and his sister, in theyre first day playing "the world" they win a player contest and each get the costumes of the legendary players kite and blackrose, the one who gets kites costume also gets kite ability to data drain enemy monsters and invected monsters, a new batch of coma victims are being found and its up to them to stop it from continueing
and saddly i've never read the mangas, but they take play both in "the world" and in the real world.

You're right about the no sense. I like that about it: it's just kinda mostly madness till the end. Even then it doesn't quite come together. I embrace the madness over and over again. I know it doesn't speak well to my character;)

I know it doesn't speak well to my character;) there is quite a bit of poetry throughout the entire show. a lot of the messages are very subtle.
