When you're listening to a song, how important to you is it what the lyrics are about? Do you care what they're singing about, or do you just like the music?

The lyrics are definetly important to me. I just usually don't figure them out for a long time after the first hearing of the song. After I do I have to really like them to enjoy the song anymore. Still if i hear a song (usually pop) where right off the bat they say whatever it is so clearly and it just reeks to me on every level: oh ya the lyrics matter and i dislike the song

I can enjoy songs under both circumstances. I always apprciate the sound of raw good music. I suppose my offcial answer to the question would be I just like the music. However there are many songs I enjoy for their words. and many great songs where I appreciate both the words and the music equally. Therion would be an example of this. However really bad lyrics could affect how I feel about song, even when it has good music. In these cases I just try not to pay attention or dwell on it.

The sound is what usually draws me to the song and the lyrics just increase my liking of it.

It really depends. Nightwish has some questionable lyrics but the music is good. While bands like Amon amarth and Inkubus Sukkubus offer both great music and lyrics. In other cases like Dead Can Dance I don't know what is being said so there it is the music.

I just realized I never answered my own question.
For me, 95% of the time or more, I don't really care what they're saying. I don't feel like trying to decipher a collection of metaphors and indirect references to try and guess what a song is about. It's reason number one why I don't like poetry. I'm a very direct person, and I feel that if you have something to say you should say what you mean rather than disguising it in a bunch of metaphors and poetic crap.
However, every once in awhile a lyric will bother me. For example, in the Mushroomhead song "Bwomp," the one singer says "if it was up to me I'd free Charles Manson." If it was up to ME, I'd kill the sick freak.

Usually I don't bother with lyrics but things like Inkubus Sukkubus and Amon Amarth speak out to me. Amon amarth's stuff is Norse based so no real hidden meaning there and Inkubus Sukkubus is all about pagan/wiccan stuff.

I listen to quite a variety of things, so both are equally important depending on what I'm listening to at the moment...at times I enjoy things without words, and at other times the words can really set the tone and feel

One thing I don't like is when a song has a one-line chorus or otherwise repeats one line over and over. Although sometimes it's alright, it has made plenty of songs get on my nerves. Like "When the Eagle Cries" by Iced Earth. I counted once how many times they say "when the eagle cries" in that song. If memory serves, it was twenty. Shows a lack of songwriting effort in my opinion.

I wasn't talking about them, honest.
If I was bashing Metallica, I have plenty of other things I could say. Like the fact that they haven't put out a good album since the black album. Oh wait, I already said that in another thread.

' I will totally agree right there...Its a big reason why I can't listen to a lot of today's music...there is just no soul to it, and things like that

for me its not so much the lyrics, but the vocals themselves. a band could have the best lyrics in the world, but the singer sucks so much that i can't listen to it. the opposite is true too. Static X has some of the dumbest lyrics but they are an excellent band

What other band would make a song about pooping in a bag while you're driving on the highway because there's no bathroom, then throwing it out the window? Or maybe you were referring to this lyrical gem: Yeah, that's the whole song.
