there are a lot of bands that i listen to that i appreciate the lyrics as well as the musicality of what theyre playing. of course, there are bands that i listen to purely for their music and vice versa. if i really had to chose, id say that i listen for the sound rather than the message. however, there are bands that i listen to that have both. those are my favorite. examples of these would be: Tool **drools**, Pink Floyd, Rage Against the Machine, Lynard Skynard, Gorillaz, and a bunch of others that i cant think of right now. ill make a list later

Having had this exact debate with you in the past is what led me to create this thread, although it's been a long time since then.

The first thing I am looking in a song is the melodic line. I have heard of songs which authors don't have the words "melodic line" and "harmony" in their dictionary. The music is the one that's attracting me at most. The power of the music, the sound of all the instruments...that's what's "grabbing" my attention. On the other hand the lyrics are important too because they are the one adding a "meaning" to the song. Of course it's hard to say 100% melody/music/ or 100% lyrics. According to me they should go together.

It's become apparent to me that perhaps I didn't phrase my question the way I intended to, to get the answers I was looking for. A better way to ask the question I meant to ask is:
When you listen to a song, do you try to understand the deeper meaning behind the words (assuming there is one)? Or are you content to listen to the music, perhaps regard the singing as just another instrument, and the words as a mnemonic device by which to remember the song? Or perhaps something in between...

Ok for me at first its just the music that attracts me, and at first I am content to just enjoy the good music, so I would see the voice as just an instrument. Latter on I look at the lyrics, especially of music I like, just to understand it better I guess. But the voice is much like instrument to me still. As for looking for deeper meanings, I don't really look with purposeful intent. Sometimes good music with objectional lyrics can bother me some, but I try to block it out of my mind.
In short the answer would be no because I don't really look for the deeper meanings at first, and when I do, its only when I like the music, and then when I like the lyrics too, to make me interested. Therion is the best example I can give on this. While its the pure music I enjoyed at first and still enjoy the most, the deeper meaning of their lyrics just cant be ignored and only add to the enjoyment.

Lyrics sont très importante.
Even more important are the vocals. If the vocals suck, I hate the band.
I can handle bad lyrics if the person singing them sounds awesome. (Example: Amy Lee, Evanescence.)
Good Lyrics + Excellent Vocals + Great Music = Iron Maiden. Go listen to them now or suffer.

My second favorite band. And you've got it right on the money. Vocals can make an otherwise good band sound absolutely horrible. That's why I can't listen to King Diamond. Sounds like the BeeGees with metal backing to me.
