What is the best one all around? I always liked mordenkainens magnificent mansion. Just feels so safe for the party to be in. Free room and board (depending on the caster i guess ). Never got a spellcaster character high level enough to cast it myself:( doesn't change the fact I like it

I'm a big proponent of grease. It's low-level so you will actually get to use it, and it's very versatile.

One of the Book of Eldritch Might series from Monte Cook, one of the main guys behind D&D 3rd edition, has a spell in it called Arcana Form. It's a 9th level spell that's incredibly powerful and essentially turns a well-prepared wizard or sorcerer into a bottomless pit of high-level spells.
Arcana form essentially turns the caster into a being of pure magic. For the duration of the spell, you're then able to use your own essence to power your spells. The effect of this is, you can cast a spell you have prepared (if you're a wizard) or you know (if you're a sorcerer) without expending a spell slot. Instead you spend 5 hit points per spell level. Alternatively, you can use magic items that work on charges without spending any charges, though I think you take some kind of ability score damage for that (probably constitution). A caster with the forethought to carry some rods of healing spells could therefore blow a bunch of hit points to cast all his other 7th, 8th and 9th level spells repeatedly, then heal himself up and do it all over again. Then when the spell wears off, just cast the spells with your spell slots!

Munchkin game anyone? Now that's a disturbing combo and I pray I'm never in a game where were fighting any battle that isn't agains't lots of enemies that requires something like that. That's fine if were fighting an army and the odds are 10 to 1.

Well a spell-storing sword can hold only up to level 3 spells. So what you'd need if you wanted to capture such a being is an artifact that's essentially a much more powerful version of such a weapon. And it could be a very cool weapon indeed.
Think about it, a magical sword that contains the trapped spirit of an ancient and powerful wizard, bound within the blade. The right incantation, if known, can release the mage, but can you control him once released? And if not, will he be grateful to you for freeing him, or try to destroy you?
