Ive always wanted to play in a D&D game that takes place in the Hyborian Age. (The stuff of Conan's day) This site is done by a guy that took the conan and authors universe and made it in a D&D setting. Ive only seen Conan from the live tv show series and the cartoon series. But the books seem to be very good. The stuff put into the site is stuff right from the books. Its a more ancient and harsh high fantasy thats older then mideval fantasty and an atmosphere I like even better. hyboria.xoth.net/index.htm

I've been told that the D&D variant rules contained in the book Iron Heroes would be perfect for a campaign set in the lands of Conan. You could ask bluecommander more about that, because he's playing in an Iron Heroes campaign at the moment.

I seem to remember you mentioning something about that before Reno. Good to know someone is actually taking advantage of it.

Sounds like fun because in a world like this magic dosen't run rampant and I share Conan's veiws on magic and wizards. Of course I'm reffering to the Conan tv show and a certian quote here.

I already got an idea for an adventure that would very cool to use. Phantom Witch already knows of this.

If others are interested I might along with Phantom witchs assitance, start something up. I already got an idea for a general overall story. Its an expansive one that connects the unknown years of 8000B.C. through myth into the more well known myths of 1000B.C. and onwards. Its a tale to explain one of the greatest mysteries. (No not Atlantis, rather its an origin tale of a certain legend)

Yup, we are going to honor Conans view on magic. Its not going to be something us players do much. Oh there will magical items out there that let you do special things, but they will be few, carefully decided and have plot revelance. They will most likely be given so you can defeat a foe that might be out of your possibilty. and you may loose the item after it serves its purpose. Goods wizards will come and go to help you as npcs, and you will do battle with evil wizards who will serve as bossess and big parts of the plot. But overall magic definately not all over the place, and beyond the grasp of most men, at least the kind of magic that lets you shoot out fireballs and lightning anyway. Remember wizards can die.

This sounds fun and the key to being able to run a game sucessfully is a good story. I've got experience running things but Shadowrun and Star Wars are a bit too complicated for me because I struggle with what would make a good story. Same reason I don't think I can run a Lord of the Rings game.

It would be hard to make a new story from the existing Sillmarion or Lord of the rings universe. In a way I like it the way it is. I couldnt imagine expanding on it. unless we are a side group of warriors involed in the war. Kind of like the ps2 game. Though if it were done, hopefully not as lame.

My campaign is set 200 years after the war of the ring. By all accounts my players enjoy it very much and as a plus for me I don't have to worry about the meta-gaming the whole thing to death.

Ok this is getting a bit off topic her but I figured I'd ask because i'm curios. How much of the Lord of the Rings map is covered in the game? Because even during the war if your far from Gondor and whatnot the war woudn't even concern you.

Well I believe its possible, I just wouldnt know where to begin myself. One thing I was going to say, was that in some ways the universe of Lord of the rings somewhat resembles Hyborian age stuff. Seeing as how both were supposed of take place in the distant past just far enough to escape recorded history. Both are low magic settings too.

The map set I bought for the game maps out all areas of middle earth north to the ice caps and Angmar to just a bit south of Mordor by the Haradrim and east out to the Lonely Mountain and Iron Hills then west with the Rohirrim and south Gondor and the grey havens. Course I also operate off of the atlas of middle earth which has a map of the entire world of Arda with a mileage estimate. Course the exact geography is touch and go but it's my job to plot that out.

That's cool because my problem with trying to ron a Lord of the Rings game isn't really staying out odf trhe main story I wouldn't know how to run one as grand seeing as how destryoing the ring is the most important thing that can be done at the moment. So if I were to run a game in that era playing elsewhere in the world would be ideal. Its why I like this Conan setting it has the same feeling. Both worlds have magic but its not overbearing.

One thing you could do is make a story out of one of those adventures from the Sillmarion. But that would be a complex thing to do, to avoid making infringes and mistakes interfeting with the Sillmarion.
