Several people have mentioned that they like this game, so I thought I'd start a seperate thread to discuss it more in-depth.
So my first question is, do you pursue a particular strategy when you're playing Monopoly? Are there certain properties you try to get, or try to avoid, and such?
When I play, I don't start with any preconceived notions of what properties I want to get or avoid. Well, few, anyway. I don't worry too much about Park Place and Boardwalk because it seems like nobody ever lands there, though of course I will get them if I can. But if somebody has one and I have the other, I am more willing to trade that to them than I am to trade into any other monopoly, so long as they're willing to pay up big for it.
I also play Monopoly on the PC sometimes, and the strategy there is very different, because you can trade monopolies to computer players and get nearly everything they have from them for it. Many's the time I would trade a property that would give them a monopoly, but in return I'd demand all their other properties, their get out of jail card if they have one, all their cash and all the cash they will make from mortgaging their properties minus about $5. And sadly enough, they usually take the trade.

The AI is far too stupid in the computer version, usually when i play i try to snag the second row, you know State, St Charles, St James place, the one between Free Parking and Jail/Visiting Time because thats the most common one you land on no matter what, Theres been times and times again that i bypassed the other 3 roads, simply by getting a 10 or landing on chance and community chests.

The plan is quite simple for me. Buy everything I can whenever I land on something even if it means mortgaging. Don't sell any property till near the end of the game if at all and this is regardless of whether I have monopolies or not. The rest is a game of chance. So I guess the idea is greed and that's showing the game has really beaten me

This strategy works best with four players or less, any more and its too difficult, but... Get one of each property and then you have control of the game. No one can build without going through you at some point, and I'm not a fun person to trade with.
Otherwise I don't go out of my way to get Park Place and Boardwalk, the first two purples, and the light blues unless I land on them. The yellow, orange, and green, and the other purple properties with three are ones I always try to get at least one of.

I also love to hound people to sell me the properties they buy at the beginning of the game. Only works against computer opponents usually, though.
Grabbing the violet and orange properties is good, as well as the red ones. Not only is there a card that dumps you on Illinois Ave., but that way people are almost guaranteed to give you money as soon as they get out of jail.
Oh, random thought: Did you know that Marvin Gardens in the game is misspelled? They meant to call it "Marven Gardens" and misspelled it, and they decided the error was too costly to fix in later editions of the game.

I think all the properties are named after real places, otherwise I don't see why it would matter whether it's Marvin or Marven Gardens.

Makes sense, even if they were based on where whoever made it lived. I want to visit my local "go" one of these days and collect my $200. I bet i'm overdue

Good idea. I'd be happy to pop by the local Free Parking and find all the money people have been paying for their taxes lately.

So where do we find these squares with the word "Go" on them so we can get our $200?

Just don't take any trains that have the names of the railroads unless it's a long trip. Going cross country for only $50-$200 wouldn't be so bad then

Yeah, I got that joke thrown at me a lot on Saturday during a Monopoly game in which that was the only property I owned. For awhile, anyway. Eventually I managed to make my way up to two railroads and Atlantic Avenue before being stomped out of existence.
Oh, speaking of Monopoly: we all knew there were a ton of Monopoly variants out there, right? I mean, I've seen NBA edition, NASCAR edition, Simpsons, practically every major city in the U.S., three different Star Wars editions, etc. etc.
Well, I discovered a few more today. Not only is there another Simpsons edition specifically based on the Halloween episodes, but now there's an Army edition, a Navy edition, and a Marine Corps edition. Now THAT is weird.

There was even a version called Ghetopoly which is pretty self explanitory as to what its about, but it was pulled off the market for being racist I believe.
