I have a feeling this one could get bad but why not try it.
What is a great decade of music? Could be over the last hundred 5ish years or further.

I'm gonna say the 1750's. Why? Because nobody expected me to. I honestly have no idea what music was like at that time. But in all seriousness, it's very hard to name a decade. Nearly every decade of the 20th century had something to recommend it (though the 70s not so much ). Being a child of the 90s, I believe I shall choose that one for now. And why? Smashing Pumpkins Green Day Rammstein Rob Zombie Marilyn Manson Iced Earth Stone Temple Pilots Faith No More just to name a few.

For me it has to be the 80's as well. New wave rings true to me still. Musically I could not ask for more than the time that gave us Depeche Mode

Course, since the original question was "what is a great decade of music?" rather than "which was the best decade for music?" that means I can answer twice. And so I shall.
Since I poked fun at the 70s before, I feel I ought to point out the good that came from that decade, musically. Though let's face it, disco left an awfully big deficit for the 70s to fill.
But hey, Judas Priest began in the 70s, even though their best work was in the 80s. Van Halen, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath... okay, that makes up for disco right there.
Now what else was good in the 1970s? How about the incomparable George Thorogood and the Destroyers? AC/DC?
Also, some of Stevie Wonder's best songs came from the 1970s. While I'm not a huge fan, I like some of his stuff (Higher Ground and Superstition both came from the 70s).
And while the Who are more often associated with the 60s, some of their better songs came along later as well. How about CSI's theme song, "Who Are You" or my personal favorite "Baba O'Riley"?
So, while I did besmirch the honor of the 1970s, in fact a lot of great music came from this time.

Any decade pre 1990 is fine with me, unless its a modern continuation of something I actually like

Nope, I don't. And personally I think the Rolling Stones had at least as much, perhaps more influence long-term than the Beatles did. Plus they were better.

Plus they were better. oh, i forgot about the stones, they rock. but cant both be as equally influentual, because their genrés evolved into completely different kinds of music. i would also have to include george clinton and the parlament funkadelic. if you keep going back, youll end up with canned heat, bb king, and elvis.

Well, I've never shopped at a store named after the Beatles, or seen a music magazine named after them. But hey. Although Ozzy Osbourne lists the Beatles as his favorite band, I defy anyone to show me Beatles influence in the songs of Black Sabbath. The Stones always had more attitude than the Beatles, and I think a clear line can be drawn from songs like "Jumpin Jack Flash" to the greater rock bands of the 1970s and 80s, like Aerosmith, Van Halen, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and such. And I believe that the music of Black Sabbath (often credited for birthing the heavy metal genre) shows more influence from the music of the Stones than it does the Beatles. And Sabbath in turn has influenced bands like White Zombie, Faith No More, Megadeth, Primus, System of a Down, and countless others. While I suppose you could likewise trace a musical lineage from the Beatles to most pop-culture rock, that would also include a lot of groups that don't meet my own definition of music (Backstreet Boys, etc.) and therefore don't count toward my imaginary Beatles/Stones influence scorecard.
