This is the series I'm in the middle of reading right now. Written by George R.R. Martin, the series so far consists of:
A Game of Thrones A Clash of Kings A Storm of Swords A Feast for Crows
The next, and I suppose last, three books are to be named:
A Dance with Dragons The Winds of Winter A Dream of Spring
Right now I'm fairly early in the series (still in the second book), but it's really good. There's very little magic compared to a lot of other fantasy series (the Shannara series and Sword of Truth both look like the Forgotten Realms in comparison to this series), and the focus is on political intrigues, although there's a fair amount of combat and other... graphic content, shall we say. On top of all that, there's now a d20 campaign setting for A Game of Thrones.
Don't know what all to say without giving any of the story away, save this: I can't put these books down. I haven't touched a video game or watched a movie since I checked these books out of the library, and I won't again until I'm done with the four books that are in print right now. READ THESE BOOKS!

Hmm maybe I'll at least take a look at them.

I'm not sure if the Franklin Park library has the first book or not. Their database claims they do but three or four times I looked and didn't find it. I ended up ordering it from one of their other libraries. And I know they have the next three books because I have them all checked out at the moment.

Incidentally, I did some nosing about on George R.R. Martin's website awhile back, and I discovered that these books are based partly on England's War of the Roses. Just an interesting bit of trivia.

A Game of Thrones is officially next up on my plate of things to read. I'm psyched to get the full effect of the story i've already heard the cliffs notes on. Good to get a feel for the RPG i've been playing in for like 6 or 7 sessions

You won't be disappointed, I promise you that. You're in for a fairly long read though.

I've now gotten past the 100 page mark of AGOT and I really have not been dissapointed. I just want to keep on reading. If only I had the time to power threw it all at once...

It's a great read. Every time I put it down, I kept thinking about it until I picked it back up.
