This is a social thread for the classical fantasy game that started it all, admists all its dragons, elves, dwarves and good old fashion hardness. The stuff of legends and of nes games. Talk of the nes original, the psx remake or the gba remake. Ive now provided social threads for FF2,3,4,5,6,Mystic Quest,Tactics,Adventure and Kefkas Revenge. And here now is the game that started it all. Oh yeah and FFTime and Again.

I went with Fighter, Monk, White Mage, Black Mage. But I regret taking a Black Mage because he sucks.

I took two fighters, white mage, and a red mage. This way I get a touch of black magic, 3 people who can use good weapons and 2 people who can heal.

I assume you want to know for a play through of the nes game or the normal(Hard) mode on the psx version.
Theres two ways to answer the question.
The Variation solution. Assuming you don't want multiple versions of one person. I believe the most succesful party includes a fighter, black belt, white mage and a red mage. Though don't discount the possibilty of using a theif over a red mage for when they become Ninjas they are really fast and strong.
They will become these characters
Fighter to Knight Black Belt to Grand Master White mage to White Wizard Red mage to Red Wizard Black mage to Black Wizard Thief to Ninja
This would be the best part to use, Though I myself have not succesfully completed the game with this party. In the nes days, Ive always used the gamegenie quite a bit. which leads to my other solution.
3 fighters and one white mage. This was the only way I beat the game without cheating and it should work. Also when you find the healing staff and the two healing helms, dont sell them. When used as items they cast heal and you can do it forever. With the 3 knights using the healing items and one white wizard, you will be able to win the game.
As for the black mage/wizard they look cool but their weak bodies don't justify use in a nomal game. I would not recomend them to be used in the normal nes game or in normal mode on the psx game. In Easy mode of the psx game however they are extremly useful for getting through hordes of enemies fast and are an asset, but thats only in easy mode or the GBA remake.

I opted for a Fighter, Red Mage, White Mage, and Black Mage party most of the time. Everyone gets to use magic at somepoint and really I find the Red Mage to be a decent fighter when properly equipped. Then I get the best of both branches of magic with the white and black. Course they suck at fighting...

I used that team alot when I played FF1 on the nes with a gamegenie. I liked it cause it would let me get most of the spells. and I used the gamegenie so that the red wizard can learn all the spells that the white wizard and black wizard could use and have every spell in the game.

Does anyone know if they ever use the floater stone after FF1? I'm not sure if it ever comes up again is all

Yes and no. In the Nes and Psx version the floater served its purpose when you used it in the desert. However in the GBA version, in one of the special dungeons, you go to a floor that mimics the overworld and need to make use of the floater to get a new airship to fly around. But thats only a bonus dungeon and only on GBA. In a proper game of FF1, its just a one time item.

oh just reread your post. do you mean as if did they ever brought the stone back in a later FF game? If so. Theres no instance I can recall of ever seeing the floater again.

Well that solves that one. So later airships were steam powered or something? I had always just assumed they used the floater stone. One for each I guess. Just an ancient tool I guess then.

I'm currently trying Fighter, Red Mage, Black Belt, and Black Mage. I found an excellent place to level up early on near the second town and i've been ahead of the game since. The marsh cave was laughably easy. I'm working my way towards finishing the earth cave as I just got the rod. Lich is going down

Wow one use of SLP2 and Lich was out for the count. 2 shots of fire3 later and he was dead without even doing a thing. Leveling up near where you get the canoe was a great idea. Now we're level 20 and just squeaked threw the castle of ordeal and became big people! Leveling is getting a bit more difficult but I bet going threw the volcano will be a freakin breeze now! Only one orb is brightened up for now still but don't worry: the light warriors are on it!
